International Literacy Day is September 8. This is an international event celebrated across our county, region, state, nation and the world. The Learn More Center will be distributing posters in Wabash County with help from the student/tutor coordinators: Vera Eidsness, Chris Lehman, Amanda Foust, Rebel Hensley, and Darlene Hunt.

International Literacy Day (ILD) 2008 is placing a special focus on the important relationship between literacy and health. This is the theme for the 2007-2008 biennium of the United Nations Literacy Decade.

UNESCO and its partners are underlining the significance of literacy for healthy societies, with a strong emphasis on epidemics and communicable diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. These are some of the world’s most important public health concerns. This year’s slogan is "Literacy is the best remedy". Posters will be distributed throughout Wabash County highlighting this theme. Contact literacy-day@unesco.org for additional information. You can help by printing out the poster or banner available to share with others.

The Learn More Center has also been presented with an anonymous gift for raising operating funds for 2009. For every $1 given a $1 will be matched up to $21,000. Our past Cup of Coffee fundraiser will be replaced by a matching donation letter campaign in response to this challenge. Watch for additional information in September and October.

Tutor sharing will be held at the Wabash Carnegie Library on September 23 from 6:30-7:45 with a follow up student/tutor recognition event in November. For additional information, call 260.982.6138 or toll free 1-877-6128 or visit our web site www.learnmorecenter.org
